Valerie Young, Ph.D.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Marriage and Family Therapist
  ABOUT ME:
I have been in the private practice of psychotherapy for over 20 years. One of my areas of expertise is helping people who have recently relocated. I also work with people suffering from anxiety, stress, depression and relationship difficulties, as well as those who wish to clarify meaning and value in their lives.
For 10 years I was the director of counseling at Kara, an agency in Palo Alto, California, where I trained and supervised over 600 counselors in working with the chronically or acutely ill, as well as with those in grief. My book on this subject, published by International Dialogue Press, was an outgrowth of my interest in this field. This interest has led me to another specialization: working with people who have a chronic or life-threatening illness. This includes working with people who have a broad range of health problems such as cancer, chronic illness, coping with the poor health of a family member, sudden accident or grief, age-related memory loss and adult-onset hearing

STYLE IN THE THERAPY SESSION: A warm, compassionate woman, I have an intuitive grasp of how best to get inside the experience of my clients and help them move toward resolution of their situations. I have a cognitive approach as well as a psychodynamic and humanistic orientation. In spite of the challenges inherent in working on therapeutic issues, it often happens that during a crisis people have a unique opportunity to see clearly what really matters in their lives.
