ABOUT ME:
The bulk of my experiences have been in community mental health agencies and psychiatric hospitals, so I have seen firsthand the spectrum of what is deemed "normal" and "pathological" functioning. For my postdoc I worked with members and civilian workers of the San Diego PD and their dependents.
My personal and professional goal is to be nonjudgmental, open-minded, and accepting. I strive to look at the individual as a complete person who possesses a unique history of experiences along with an individualized biological and genetic make-up. As such, I try to consider the symptoms that one is experiencing and understand them within a certain context that is unique for that client. Simply "treating" the symptoms is an approach commonly undertaken by many other clinicians and, while I definitely believe in the benefits of immediate symptom relief, I am also of the opinion that more lasting effects can be produced from an intensive, consistent regimen of therapy.
STYLE
IN THE THERAPY SESSION: Relaxed, supportive, inquisitive, curious, warm, and empathic, but sometimes challenging and confrontative, depending on the needs of the client at any particular time.
Generally I believe that relationships are the core means by which we negotiate the trials and tribulations of the world. When we experience relational deprivations (whether "real" or "perceived") it can have profound lasting effects on how we interpret the world and interact with others. The core of my work, then, has to do with repairing and/or mourning such relational lapses and facilitating the development of more productive, healthy relationships. I do this partially by examining your relationships, but also by looking at aspects of our own emerging relationship.
My approach has been called depth psychology, but the terms psychodynamic, interpersonal, interrelational could apply as well. I also incorporate elements of object relations, ego psychology, and self psychology.
