ABOUT ME:
Here is a bit about my perspective on human development, human distress, and therapy; for more information, please visit my practice home page at www.doctorgassaway.com. I hold that, as children, it is healthy emotional contact with our parents that brings us forward as strong and vibrant creatures and provides us with mental and emotional structure as we inch our way forward in life. It’s a time we rely on our parents (especially our mothers!) to hold up their end of this agreement and to “listen” to us emotionally... but things don’t always go so well. When the parents or loved ones we trusted to protect and to understand our hearts and minds have instead abused, disregarded, or abandoned that trust, or have simply failed to resonate effectively with us, our mental life becomes complicated and painful; we sometimes have to engage in disturbing behaviors just to “set things right.” Or, often, we’re simply anxious and unhappy for time on end without much relief.

STYLE
IN THE THERAPY SESSION: Psychotherapy with me is a Process of Repair. It always starts with my placing my feelings and awareness into a position of empathic relatedness to yours. This means I lay my personal issues aside for our time together and try to make my internal responses into something of a sensitive instrument tuned to your wavelength. This manner of relating, together with my formal training in psychology, proceeds to inform me about what might be wrong -- about "how" you're hurting.
As our work together proceeds, our therapy hour becomes an emotionally safe place, a space in which your feelings can expand, be held, and finally begin to be soothed. In this context, long-standing compulsions and problem emotions can start to have less and less force. And why not? The very context for their existence is changing!
