Book Description
The Fine Print of Self-Publishing has been lauded by many experts as the Consumer Reports of the self-publishing industry. This book has helped thousands of authors choose the right self-publishing company and avoid the ones with unfair contracts or low-quality services. The Fine Print of Self-Publishing analyzes and critiques the contracts and services of the top 48 self-publishing companies. Additionally, the book educates authors on how to decipher the legalese in self-publishing contracts. As a result, many authors have been able to intelligently negotiate their own book contracts without having to hire a lawyer.

Planning on self-publishing? You better start here! ( beclerwill )
You wrote a book and now what??
I asked myself the very same question back in November of 2006 and if I wouldn't have came across Mark Levine's `The fine print of self-publishing', that's probably where I'd still be.
Levine managed to create a very helpful book with a great amount of resources about both, POD and off-set printers. Mark deciphers the contracts of 45 major self-publishing companies and explains them to us in `plain English'. Further, he creates four categories and rates these 45 companies within. Throughout the book it becomes pretty clear how every single company receives its rating.
Self-publishing can be an author's dream, especially for a first time author, or it can quickly turn into a nightmare, and to prevent this I strongly suggest to pick up a copy of `The fine print' if you are in the process of finding the right help to get your book out there.
I encourage to read the newest version of Mark's `The fine print of self-publishing', because since the release of the first edition, many POD companies have changed their pricing (make no mistake - not to your favor) and their contracts. It is also astounding to see, how some of the PODs have plummeted in rating. IUniverse, for instance, a company Mark rated very high in the first edition of `The fine print', now resides in the `Publishers to avoid' - section.
Granted, different authors have different expectation from their publisher and with some of the `qualities' expressed by Mark, I might not agree.
However; this guy knows his stuff and until the `big guys' from New York come and run my door in, I will self-publish my work and always seek Mark's advice.

An outstanding resource for both novice and experienced authors! ( huxley2 )
Disappointed with my original POD publisher after a few misprints and doesn't have a distribution deal with Ingram, I eagerly read this book the day it arrived in the mail. Detailed, concise, and rather comnprehensive, this writer's resource has helped me focus on my short-term and longterm needs. I can't help but wish I had read this book two years ago!
Like many other novice authors, I've clicked on website ads, downloaded submission guidelines, and found myself confused by the contracts. Worse, when I do get friendly sales representatives on the phone, I often feel that I'm not asking the right or best questions. I've been paralyzed by indecision.
This resource has clarified my choices (Booksurge, iUniverse, Dog Ear Press, Infinity) and ruled out some that sounded quite attractive on the surface. Thank you!

A Great Find!
"In our [a friend and I] stumbling about we ran across your book, The Fine Print ofSelf-Publishing, which we each purchased a copy. It was a godsend, as it permitted us to get up to speed quickly in this publishing business."

excellent reference and resource for self publishing... ( james150 )
Overall very good and usable information. I say overall because even though it is only two years young there is information that is already out of date. For anyone gathering resources and having questions about POD publishing this book will save you tons of time and some trial and error to be sure. One of the great nuggets that I did not see mentioned in other reviews which is very important concerns ISBN's. I was not aware until I read this book that if you decide to go with a package from any POD publisher and part of that package includes the ISBN that if you leave that POD publisher for whatever reason the ISBN belongs to them not to you. So if you decided to move publishers or publish yourself you would need to get a new ISBN. Or, you could bring your own ISBN with you and take it when you leave which would allow an easier transition if you published elsewhere at a later date. Good book; very helpful.

Just what a self-publisher needs ( misspammy )
Having your own book published can be very expensive, and this book gives you the real scoop on the most prominent self-publishing houses--which charge too much, which offer too little for the money, what you should look for in the contract, and what you can expect. After reading through this, I knew at once which publisher to go with. This book is well worth the price, because it could save you hundreds to thousands of dollars and a lot of problems.
