Product Description

Acclaimed novelist Anne Rivers Siddons's new novel is a stunning tale of love and loss.

For as long as she can remember, they were Cam and Lilly--happily married, totally in love with each other, parents of a beautiful family, and partners in life. Then, after decades of marriage, it ended as every great love story does...in loss. After Cam's death, Lilly takes a lone road trip to her and Cam's favorite spot on the remote coast of Maine, the place where they fell in love over and over again, where their ghosts still dance. There, she looks hard to her past--to a first love that ended in tragedy; to falling in love with Cam; to a marriage filled with exuberance, sheer life, and safety-- to try to figure out her future.

It is a journey begun with tender memories and culminating in a revelation that will make Lilly re-evaluate everything she thought was true about her husband and her marriage.

Product Reviews:
  Bummed Out ( egranfors )
I love Anne Rivers Siddons. I loved this book until the end. Then I got mad. I haven't been this mad at a book since "Once is Not Enough," which I threw across the room when I finished it. The deplorable ending of this fascinating novel leaves too many loose strings and undercuts one of the main characters to too great a degree. And the cat? It has to go. Where are editors anyway? Sad to say, this book does not measure up to previous wild and wonderful rides with Ms. Siddons.
Her best book ever!! ( retnfla )
I've read all of Siddons' books and this is her best!! A very moving story of a woman who loses the two loves in her life and how one affects the other. This is a must read for those who read Anne Rivers Siddons.
  what happened????? ( gonboyz )
Really....what happened??? This is not the Anne Rivers Siddons writing I have known and loved.
And.....what happened to the last third of this story?
It is a mish-mash and a guessing game....I prefer real, actual endings. Not speculation. Enough of that in real life.
Ms. Siddons....come back.
Should have given it one star...but am respectful of her past excellence.
The magic of first love ( marybookgirl )
Away from the familiar backdrop of the Low Country and the South, Anne Rivers Siddons' newest book Off Season moves to coastal Main. Lilly Constable McCall is returning home to Edgewater, the family summer home in main. Her beloved husband Cam is beside her in an urn and her only other companion is Cam's cat Silas. Lilly is returning to the place where summers were wondrous and magic happened when least expected. It was at Edgewater Lilly met her first love, Jon Lowell. That summer she was eleven and Jon was twelve. It was a heady time; the country was caught up in the Kennedy mystique. Lilly and Jon explored the island searching for new osprey and sailing the sound. A single event throws the entire summer into turmoil and Lilly retreats into a safe place of her own making.
Years later, it is Edgewater that beckons a heartbroken Lilly to return and she spends the remainder of her summer with the happy memories of family and her life with Cam. Something lurks under the surface, a hint that all was not as secure as it seemed. Hints of an unwelcome presence surface and Lilly faces with the reality that her life was not quite as it seemed.

Anne Rivers Siddons has crafted a wonderful blend of reality and magic. She creates characters that are complex and fallible and mostly likable. The joy of first and unselfconsciousness of first love captivate and the heartbreak of betrayal stings. . This is a captivating book that I wasn't able to put down.

  Editor? There was an editor?
Two points:
If Mrs. Siddons had taken the time to develop the storyline and the rest of the characters as much as she did Lilly's in childhood, the book would have been excellent. Almost as though the author was rushed to print rather than finish the book properly.

Editing was abysmal! There are lots and lots and lots of mistakes. "She puts the cat and his sweater on the sofa. Then only 2 or 3 sentences later, the cat glares at her until she puts the sweater on the sofa. The urn looks well on the mantle. That urn should be looking good...All this on the first couple of pages - very distracting. Plot mistakes and character errors very evident throughout the book. Intro to Jon has him older than 12, but the ending has him 12.

Even through all that, my reaction to the book as a whole was the same as when I read As I Lay Dying at the age of 15. WHAT??? They went through all that for this ending??? Siddens is still a great read. And I am still thinking and talking about this book.
