This is a great book. A classic of history republished in English.
The way Ussher weaves secular and biblical history together is fantastic. From an historical point of view the book is valuable. From a current perspective, it is a 'poke-in-the-eye' for long age indoctrinators. Whatever one thinks about the biblical timeline, this book is a worthy addition to one's library. The only criticism I have pertains to the CD-ROM included with the hardbound edition. Although it has much information, I feel that it is presented poorly... but you would not purchase a work like this solely for the CD-ROM!!!

Ussher's "Annals Of The World" stands as a true classic in so many ways. It is difficult to pin down the one thing that makes it so good.
The wealth of information is astounding. There is also an included CD-ROM that has a whole lot of time line based information, much of it based on the Biblical historical accounts that list the ages of the patriarchs and other important figures in history, many of which overlap, giving a continuous record of the times in which many events occurred.
Even if you are not biblically inclined, there is still a lot of information that is unbiased, that speaks to the existence and times of many of history's famous and infamous figures and deeds.
History is history. Some may say that people who believe in God distort history to suit their purposes, but the same could be said of people who do not believe in God.
A good example being the most famous person to ever live: Jesus. Did He or didn't he actually live? And when? Did He do as he claimed? If you research it, even Roman historians of the period will tell you Jesus really walked the earth. His divinity is another topic and I am not here to debate the merits or lack of merits of the two sides and their ongoing war of ideas on this or other subjects dealing with religion in general.
No doubt that this book will ignite more than a few debates all its own. However, if you read through the exhaustive documentation, it becomes very clear that this cannot be the work of a man seeking to "rewrite" History; he merely wishes to chronicle it before much of it disappears forever and so becomes the perview of myth and legend.
Even in his day, Ussher had to be seeing the deterioration of ancient documents and the knowledge and information they contained disappearing forever. So he set about to preserve as much as was possible, given the resources he had available -- just like modern day historians might do.
You lose nothing and have everything to gain in getting this documentation of early History. You will find much to praise, moreso than to criticise.

No more revisionist history! ( mbaire )
James Ussher's classic work is an absolute joy to read. I was up 'til the wee hours reading the night I got it. The writing is truly fresh and exciting, a bit unexpected for a volume first published in the mid 1600's by an Anglican archbishop!
I happen to hold a young-earth creationist's view of origins, and find Bishop Ussher's calculations relating to creation utterly believable, but no matter your worldview you will find the histories complete and engaging, interspersed as they are with first hand accounts of some of civilization's most defining moments.
The bindings of this volume seem sturdy enough at first glance, though time only will tell how it holds up to the study this book will certainly receive! The print is crisp and clear, and the illustrations are very fine as well.
This volume belongs in the library of every serious student of history.
The supplemental CD gives a wealth of solidly scriptural information to complement the biblical timeline charts, and some excellent commentary on the position of God's infallible Word in ancient and contemporary times.
