Product Description
Tommie Bass was a pivotal figure in the changing landscape of American herbalism and an inspiration to a whole generation of younger herbalists. Tommie practiced what he preached, living a life true to his beliefs, creating an archetype whose influence transcended the Appalachian area of north Alabama where he lived. The time-tested techniques and pharmacopoeia of Appalachian fold medicine form a component of traditional Western fold medicine that embodies American self-reliance and creativity, which is still evolving today. This book presents, often in his own words, the living legacy that Tommie left us of plants and their healing powers.

This is the one to buy
This is THE book to buy about Tommie Bass. It is the best one written of all the others. Excellent photos of plants, excellent reference. This is an update of the Shinbone Ridge book, with better plant photos. The Crellin books are written in the style of college thesis. Patton's book is written for immediate use, reference and instruction. You can "hear" Tommie Bass' voice through Darryl Patton's work.

A life dedicated to serving others. ( homeplace9 )
Sometimes in this world we forget the simple things in life, how to stay close to nature and learn from it. Tommie Bass was certainly a man who stayed close to nature and learnt from it. From a very young boy Tommie was drawn to learning about the plants that surrounded him in his mountain backyard. He took in all he could from those around him including his immediate family and from them he gained an immense knowledge of herbs that can help heal us. With this knowledge he went on to live a life that was dedicated to helping others, not often for money, just because he cared.
What I liked especially about this book was Tommie Basses honesty, he knows the herbs have a healing power in them because as he says "that's what God intended", but he also knows that we must seek main stream medical advice if things are not repairing themselves. What wonderful stories there are in this book to complement the herb knowledge Tommie had, the stories being in the first half and in the second half there is well documented advice on herbs with colour plates for identification.
It is well worth buying, you will not be disappointed. Lastly, Darryl Patton should be commended on this fine book, thankyou for putting it together, fine job!!
