Product Description
Includes a new glossary from Oliver Turnbull

In this examination of the conjunction of neuroscience and psychoanalysis, Mark Solms, one of the most influential experts in this field, introduces a combination of the methods of psychoanalysis and neuroscience. Based on four series of theoretical lectures and clinical presentations delivered at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, this invaluable work comprises a thorough examination of this union, from a comprehensive history of the origins of psychoanalysis in neuro-science to a contemplation of its future. Solms penetratingly explicates the connection between aphasia and neuroses, a topic that so engaged Freud. From the neurodynamics of dreaming to fascinating clinical studies of patients living with a 'perforated consciousness,' Solms illuminates the mystery of mind-body connectivity.

The Drs Solms are well qualified for this task. Mark Solms is a member of the British Neuropsychological Society and the British Psycho-Analytical Society (and an Hon. Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society). He regularly publishes scientific and scholarly work in both neuropsychology and psychoanalysis. Karen Kaplan-Solms is a speech pathologist and a neuropsychologist. She is a member of the British Neuropsychological Society and a candidate of the British Psycho-Analytical Society. She, too, has published in both neuropsychological and psychoanalytic journals.

"Freud, in his 1895 'Project for a Scientific Psychology', attempted to join the emerging discipline of psychoanalysis with the neuroscience of his time. But that was a hundred years ago, when the neuron had only just been described, and Freud was forced - through lack of pertinent knowledge - to abandon his project. We have had to wait many decades before the sort of data which Freud needed finally became available. Now, these many years later, contemporary neuroscience allows for the resumption of the search for correlations between these two disciplines. The Drs Solms are uniquely qualified for his task, having trained in both psychoanalysis and the neurosciences, and the work described in this volume ushers in a new era for our field." - Arnold Z. Pfeffer, from his Foreword

Product Reviews:
  The Best of Freud's Legacy
Freud couldn't have asked for a finer compliment than to have neuropsychologists using his work to advance the study of brain injury and disorder in the neural scientific realm of our time. For those not familiar with Freud or his 1895 "Project for a Scientific Psychology," this book proves an interesting introduction, as it was mine. I decided, after reading it, to look further into Freud's work and his life. Truly, as it turned out, he was a fascinating character and there was a very valuable application of brain/mind science at every turn. A bit of knowledge of neuronanatomy comes in handy with this volume, but is not entirely necessary. If you long for an enjoyable challenge, then this book will readily supply it.
