Product Description
Every practitioner today will welcome the Handbook of Medicine in Psychiatry as the first realistic, evidence-based overview of medicine for psychiatrists in training or practice because it is - Written to address the lack of empirical data showing how the type of medical knowledge acquired through traditional psychiatric residency training can be used in the psychiatric setting.
- Organized to reflect the realities confronting clinicians working in self-standing inpatient psychiatric settings, where inadequate histories, premature diagnostic closure, and a reluctance to perform physical assessments contribute to underrecognized, misdiagnosed, and suboptimally treated medical disorders in at least half of all psychiatric patients.
- Based on the findings of a retrospective analysis of internal medicine evaluations requested for 1,001 patients (501 men and 500 women, ranging from age 8 to 98) admitted in 2002 to a 208-bed urban private psychiatric hospital, which found that most medical consultations requested in a psychiatric hospital were due to a limited group of symptoms, signs, and laboratory abnormalities—that is potential side effects of psychotropic drugs (falls, hyperglycemia, hypotension, hyponatremia, nausea, constipation, leucopenia), pain symptoms, and respiratory and urinary tract infections.
- Structured for easy reading and comprehension, with topics grouped in 14 sections according to a common feature, such as cardiac arrest, abnormal vital signs, pain, signs of common infections, and respiratory distress; 5 chapters that discuss essential features in clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, risk stratification, and assessment and management in the psychiatric setting.
- Focused on the ways in which psychiatric disorders and their treatments produce pathophysiologic changes and alter the classic presentation of common and serious conditions.
Intended to augment rather than replace established print and electronic resources of medical knowledge, the meticulously illustrated and referenced Handbook of Medicine in Psychiatry offers an invaluable resource for clinicians today as they pursue the complex practice of psychiatry in the 21st century.

An interesting book for trainee psychiatrists ( milkcow5 )
This book's aim is interesting because physical disorders in psychiatric settings is hard to manage for a psychiatrist trained mainly in a self-standing psychiatric hospital.
Readers can take a general view of that field, or physical disorders in psychiatric settings.
The contents is well-organized, easy to read style even for Japanese learners. I spent 6 months to finish raading it at free moments during my work. Average Japanese doctors may be able to finish reading it even for a shorter period of time.

good reference ( tennis123 )
Very helpful reference that gives context to various medical conditions as seen in psychiatric patients. Often texts or other sources do not address the unique situation and this text does so clearly and effectively. Helpful flowcharts formulate material in a clear and useful form.

Fantastic!
This is a wonderful book- the best of it's kind. It is well written and easy to use. It is a must for the psychiatric resident!!

Intuitively organized with easy-to-follow flowcharts. Highly recommended.
As a psychiatric intern, this book helps me a great deal as I care for patients with comorbid psychiatric and medical conditions. Organized by signs and symptoms, the handbook makes it easier to quickly develop a differential diagnosis, work up the patient, and provide the appropriate treatment. In addition to the handbook's clear and concise text, its numerous flowcharts are particularly helpful.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who provides care to patients with psychiatric illnesses.

Very helpful ( staph000 )
As a first year Psychiatry resident I have found this manual very helpful as a first source when managing patients that also have medical problems. The book consistantly addresses each medical problem in the context of a comorbid psychiatric condition, so that information that is usually glossed over or even excluded in most medical or online texts is easily available and accessible in a single, well organized, concise manual. When any of my patients have a medical issue, I can grab this book and in 5 minutes review psychiatric conditions and medications that may be relevent to the diagnosis and treatment of the problem as well as have an easy to follow algorithm to help with decisions such as sending to the patient to the ER vs following up as an outpatient. I highly recommend this book for other psychiatry residents or anyone who frequently sees patients with comorbid psychiatric conditions.
