Product Description
The basic business model of the book publishing industry remained largely unchanged between the Great Depression and the turn of the Millennium. Print a lot of books, try to get them reviewed so that stores would stock them on consignment, advertise, then hope that they don't come back as returns. Small imprints and self-publishers were reduced to begging distributors to accept their titles at discounts of 60% or more, and were expected to accept returns in any condition and quantity. Print-on-demand book publishing, combined with short-discount distribution and Internet marketing, is turning the publishing business on its head. For the first time, authors are finding that they can launch their own publishing businesses and earn more from their writing than they would with a major trade publisher. Small imprints can invest their scarce resources in acquiring, designing and promoting new titles, rather than gambling on tons of books that cost money to keep in inventory. This book details the new method with which authors and publishers alike can use POD to cut costs and increase profits, while reaching new readers through the magic of Internet marketing.

Taking Morris' Advice: Five Years Later ( nortoncreekpress )
I stumbled across Morris' Web site five years ago, when I was thinking about getting into self-publishing. His methods were what made the venture (Norton Creek Press) successful.

Everything in Morris' book works and is clearly explained. Read it, and go forth and do likewise.
  Title is a misnomer ( farmerbear )
I originally wanted to learn a lot more about POD and copyrights. The author does talk about it, but the amount is so little compared to what I eventually found on the internet. I was hoping for a little more insight into the matter. If you are more interested in trying to get it published through a big company, or wanting an agent, or trying to canvas companies, then this is it. To much, though, was spent in this area with respect to the title and the write-up.
Answers Many Questions with Clear Explanations and Examples
This book provides clear explanations for many terms in the publishing industry, as well as examples from the author's experience to illustrate his explanations. There are specific answers to many disjointed questions that authors raise as they explore the technical aspects of publishing, printing, marketing and distributing their books. Rosenthal delineates specific publisher basics and author basics. He provides websites and addresses to pertinent agencies. His book systematically provides knowledge about trade publishing, print-on-demand and self-publishing. This information is very helpful for authors BEFORE they submit manuscripts for publication. Rosenthal weaves in humor in his chapter on book design and proof reading. He invites readers to chuckle with him and learn from his experience. I feel that reading this book was a one-on-one chat with a seasoned author willing to share his expertise on publishing in the internet age.
Good Book on POD Publishing ( brandon_simpson )
Before I read this book, I had already published three books. When I saw that Steve Weber recommended it, I had to see why. The book contains so much information about POD publishing, and the author writes about it as a business. He gives you a case study of one of his books. If you're not interested in the business part of writing books or if you don't like math, you probably won't like this book.

The author first starts out with the basics of publishing. He explains how trade publishing works, and eventually moves on to POD publishing. One of his best tips is to have a subtitle that "describes" what the book is about. Being creative with a subtitle will backfire on you. Most POD published books are pushed with Internet marketing. So a detailed subtitle makes the book more findable.

Rosenthal explains that your website should not be an advertisement to anything. I agree. Nobody wants to read an ad. You're better off giving excerpts of your book for free on your website.

One thing that could've made this book better is how to format your book in MS Word. Although he does recommend Aaron Shepard's "Perfect Pages."

  An eye-opener ( bhudgins64 )
Morris Rosenthal was the first to posit the idea that POD books are best sold online and to a niche audience. He clearly delineates the steps needed to take your manuscript and turn it into a book via Lightning Source. While some of the material is dated, due to developments in 2007 and 2008, the basic idea still stands.
Some of the material in the book is rather technical and would be better digested by computer savvy people than by a technobooby like me. However the general concept still stands. Rosenthal's analysis of Amazon book rankings is obsolete--at least it was in the version of the book I read. But the basic idea is very important. Read it along with "Aiming at Amazon" by Aaron Shepherd.
