Product Description
What if you had a secret power that could reduce burnout, increase productivity, and improve communication? Would you be intrigued? Furthermore, what if this power could be used in any situation to benefit your life, and you didn’t even have to train yourself to use it? Everyone has such a resource right at their fingertips. It’s called ‘instincts.’ Psychologists have ignored this elusive third part of the mind for over a century, but the influence of instincts-and how to use them to your benefit -is about to be revealed. Powered by Instinct: 5 Rules for Trusting Your Guts is a landmark book by the country’s foremost authority on human instincts, Kathy Kolbe. It will introduce readers to her newest discoveries in the field of human behavior that will transform the way the world thinks about what makes people act they way they do. The book will lay out the accumulating body of evidence that shows that our culture’s focus on the intellect has caused us to stray from innate abilities and the benefits of going with our grain instead of stressing ourselves by trying to change who we are. This hands-on, how-to guide explains an unparalleled approach to work, relationships, learning and enjoying life that provides maximum benefits with no effort on your part to change a single thing about yourself.

Product Reviews:
The Kolbe Concept ( _elizabeth_ )
I read Kathy Kolbes--The Connative Conection and checked out the Kolbe website first. So when I read this book, I was bogged down by the necessary filler of initial explanation and justification!
This is accurate mathmatical people pattern data. Like Myers-Briggs data. The Kolbe Concept IS the place to begin when you want to understand your natural Mode of Operation. Because it IS your initial programmed striving instinct way of approaching and processing data when problem solving (doing life) it validates how you WILL do and WON'T do anything. How you Operate before your emotions or your logic style comes into play. I took the on-line test and it was accurate. Then I considered my Myers-Briggs temperament and then my Enneagram personality bent. I know myself too well now. I'm still working on my Maslows Self-Actualization level though. Fun!
Kathy Kolbe show us striving instincts best!!!
Tap into the Power of Instinct ( castlebooknook )
I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts. ~John Locke

Powered by Instinct presents a way to success that is determined by powerful motivations or impulses and reactions that are below the conscious level. I also think Kathy Kolbe is tapping into Intuition, because when you use Intuition, you are technically making decisions based off what you sense vs. the use of a rational process. There are times when everything inside you is saying: "GO," and it is based much more on a feeling than a detailed or organized thought process.

Kathy Kolbe also presents the idea of fatigue, fear and frustration leading to despair. Once you feel an overwhelming sense of despair, how many good decisions are you prepared to make? She also makes an excellent point about the actions you should take to avoid problems.

After reading this book, you may start to tap into your personal power center. If everything inside you is screaming "no" or "stop," then you may want to listen to that inner voice instead of dragging out the process through an extended session of contemplation. I liked her idea about not finishing a book if you are not enjoying it and I have been listening to my inner voice for quite some time on that point.

So, with that said, I happened upon page 65 and realized I wanted to go to the website and take a test. When I arrived at the site, I found out you had to pay for the test. So, if you are interested in reading this book, spending time taking a test at a site and then analyzing your results, it could be a fun way to spend a few days learning about yourself.

If you decide not to take the test, you can still enjoy this book. I'd be willing to bet that if you are reading this book, you have a good idea of whether your life is out of balance or whether you are in need of taking the test and gaining a sharper focus.

The entire book is technically a conversation between Ev and Kathy. Ev being "everybody." There are sections where you can record your thoughts. Are you instincts telling you that you have too much stress or too little relaxation? Should you sit down and figure out your priorities? Does knowing your purpose in life put this entire book into perspective? I personally think that if you have a specific purpose in life, you will start to make more instinctive decisions. This book will encourage you to:

1. End the cycles of procrastination and action. You will act more quickly.
2. Step out of despair and start to believe in your abilities.
3. Take no action when nothing works - patience in the midst of conflict.
4. Act with a sense of purpose and passion.
5. Increase the joy in your life and follow your dreams.

This entire book seems to be mostly about balancing your life in order to enhance your creative potential. You may decide to "target your top priorities," or make a decision today based on your instincts. Most of my best decisions have come from an extended thought process and some of my worst decisions have been at times when I didn't follow my instincts. I think balance is needed. You could feel fearful or even face overwhelming disappointment, but still know that you are making the right decision. I read this book at exactly the right moment because I had to make a decision based more on instinct than a complex thought process.

I did it again.

Forever scanning the universe for new theories on personality development and being in a stressed out state of mind(note to self, do not buy books on hunches in this state of mind...) I decided to buy this book at Borders. I think I paid way too much for it...$25.00. Especially when I got into it and found out to understand it, I needed to buy more testing on the internet. For $50.00! Just when I thought I was over my get rich quick, something new under the sun, 'get a life coach to solve my life' mentality....

Had again! I was mesmerized by the words conative, and "new research" and famous test pioneer family....Lou Dobbs even liked it. Lou Dobbs!

I should have paid more attention to the referenced companies, like Xerox, which have floundered in the past 10 years, or the blatant self-promotion that is cover to cover or that any book on intuition that doesn't reference Caroline Myss is suspect. Another reason to sharpen my gut.

I like the subject, I like that there is some good information. I did not like being conned into spending more money to understand the book...tsk tsk. It was cheesball-dropping it in subtley in the conversation like that...It reminds me of multi-level marketing. Took WAY away from her credibility. This approach is manipulative and old school.

Before I got pulled into a labyrinthine multi-level marketing run up my bill scheme(will I need to buy another test to understand this one, attend a seminar to get the real meat?) I decided to come here and read if others had a similar feeling....

It seems I am not alone.

not much more than an infomercial for website products
Though a few tidbits of encouragement may be picked from this book, I found the oversimplified and unlikely dialogue between two strangers a mind-numbing format. The "meat" behind Kathy Kolbe's philolosphy is condensed into a few pages of academic style writing at the end of the book. Most frustrating though was the contstant reference to the results of a personality test that was NOT included in the book, but could be found on-line......for $49.95.

Your instinct should tell you to not waste your time on this book.

One major flaw!! ( thderamus )
Judging from the other reviews, this book contains some interesting information, but I couldn't get past page ten because the author keeps talking about instinct when it's quite obvious that she means intuition. You'd think that an author who is going to devote a book to one subject would know the proper definition of that subject, but apparently not.
If you want a good book on intuition, I'd suggest A STILL, SMALL VOICE by Echo Bodine.
I was thinking of donating this POWERED BY INSTINCT book to the local library, but that would mean that I'd be helping to mislead others, so I plan to throw it into a nearby river.
