 Definitive Book On Essential Oils ( sonlit7 )
I have yet to find any book written in English that can replace the exhaustive scientific information available on essential oils in this one. The size of this book may prove formidable to some. If you hated chemistry in school, you may find the scientific chapters breaking down each essential oil's properties tedious. However, the writer is a talented educator and interjects not only appropriate humor but fascinating lore into every paragraph. There are basic chapters on techniques and useage of essential oils, primarily in theory form, but not "recipes" or treatments for specific ailments. The book is prefaced by thorough reviews of most of the competently written, available books on the subject. I would have preferred this material at the back of the book as reference material in order to jump right into the subject. You may wish to take note of that fact and move past those reviews initially. Anyone who intends a thorough understanding of essential oils and essential oil useage MUST read this book as it is a virtual college education on the subject in a manual. Laymen practitioners should read, own and periodically review this book to remain competent in practice. This book is the Merck manual PLUS of Essential Oils, IMHO.

 A lot of information, but not all correct
Dr. Stewart is not chemist, nor knows chemistry so well, therefore he made several errors in this book. Although he collected a lot of information, not all materials are well-reviewed nor verified. His explanation about the transformation of matricin(he calles it matricene) to chamazulen is incorrect, the classification of terpinen-4-ol as phenolic compound is invalid, let alone the false chemical formulas of chamazulen and terpinen-4-ol.
His preaching reduces the professional quality of the book. What a pity ! A book is recommended for beginners and for professionals who has no ideas about chemistry. For those who have good background, it is a good book to pick up information and to verify it on one's own.

 Beginner to Essential Oils - Way over my head! ( 03hockeymom )
As a beginning user of essential oils trying to educate myself, this book was an overwhelming read for me (at nearly 850 pages). I would instead recommend Dr. Stewart's book as an excellent resource book for professionals who work with and educate others about essential oils. (e.g. Licenced Aromatherapists, Raindrop Facilitators, and Aromatherapy Instructors). It is much more of a textbook on the how & why of the Chemistry behind essential oils than which essential oil is good/bad for this or that and how best to use it.
Even for professionals without scientific background, Dr. Steward's book is written in an approchable style, weaving seemingly dry material on the subject of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemotypes, Isoprenes, Terpenes, etc. in with Christian spiritual commentary and insightful stories.
5 stars for professionals. 1 star for the beginner.

David Stewart is the worst type of snake-oil salesman. He uses his PhD in seismology and organic-chemistry jargon to imply that essential oils cure everything.
There is no statistically valid research in this book that supports the effectiveness of essential oils. Stewart uses the testimony of others to imply that his oils are effective, but testimony doesn't prove anything. Why? Consider this: how many testimonies do you think he includes where the person says the oils didn't work? None. You are given a biased, inaccurate picture of essential-oil effectiveness.
Even worse, Stewart uses the old trick of giving testimonies instead of honest research. The FDA does not allow someone to lie about whether a product actually cures a disease, but you can "quote" someone else. Instead of honest research, Stewart uses quote after quote to imply that he can cure you with essential oils. As a PhD, he should be ashamed of himself. He knows better.
Stewart is a charlatan using his education and religion to prey upon the sick and needy. He wants you to buy his oils and take his training courses, so that he can earn his thirty shekels of silver. As a PhD, he has betrayed his duty to search for truth, and as a Christian, he has offended God for his lies. He is selling snake oil to make money from your suffering.
Do not buy this book!
