Ah, The Shrinking of Treehorn. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs! Flat Stanley. Even the beloved, silly The Piggy in the Puddle. Janet Schulman, editor of The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury and longtime children's book editor and publisher extraordinaire, knows how to pick 'em. Here, she has lovingly gathered 26 more best-loved stories in one stout volume. Although You Read to Me & I'll Read to You functions as a companion to her earlier anthology, it is not, as Schulman says in the introduction, more of the same. These stories, from William Steig's Amos and Boris and Daniel Pinkwater's Blue Moose to Freckle Juice by Judy Blume and The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, were carefully selected based on their appropriateness for reading aloud. Storylines are more fully developed, with more words and fewer pictures.  Another great anthologie from Janet Shulman
We love the 20th Century Children's Book Collection (perfect for our 4-year-old) and just added this to our book collection. This is a tad on the 'older' side - not as many pictures with the stories and they are longer. We read from it but will probably enjoy it a little more in the next few years. The stories are great and many you would probably not read if not for being included in this collection. It's like having 40 books in 1. I wish Janet Schulman would do more of these collections.

When the child is familiar with the nursery rhymes, and has repeated them over and over until they are really familiar, this book provides a delightful way of creating drama out of them. Two people reading them., and enjoying the reading, can introduce drama and put a completely different slant on the familiar rhymes, extending the meaning, and extending their usefulness.
Very refreshing, with or without a classroom application.

Title and Grade Level May Mislead Some Buyers ( credentialed-tutor )
This book is delightful for the right age or skill-level reader. Please don't expect the child to read back to you until the child is about 8-10. Through hearing an older skilled reader share the stories, the child will love them ; however, in most cases the child will not easily be able to read back until grades 3 or 4. Read enough sample pages to judge for the child you have in mind.

Great Book
I found this book on the sale table at my local Border's Book Store and though it might be fun to read to my soon who was 4 - 1/2 at the time. We both enjoyed the stories and I have read some of them by myself. My favorite is The True Story of The Three Little Pigs. As a budding stand up comic I have always found that there is a lot of fun and laughs in fairy tales and this story proves it. My son likes the longer stories and if it is to long we do it over two nights. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading to their kids and it also helps with children learing new words and works on their attention span.

 Disappointment
I bought this book to take on vacation for our 3 year old son, hoping that it would eliminated the need to pack 20 or so books. The selections are excellent however the pictures with the stories are small and it seems that many of the pictures have been deleted. And much of the joy of reading these stories comes from looking at the pictures.
My recommendation is to print out the table of contents and then go check the individual books out at the library.
