Product Description
Like its predecessors, the seventh edition of this text reflects Rick Schaefer's mission to bring readers a comprehensive, up-to-date presentation that teaches them how to think critically about society and their own lives from a wide range of classical and contemporary perspectives. Combining balanced coverage of theory with current research findings, distinctive social policy sections, examples of interest to students, and abundant learning aids and exercises, this text will help students develop a sociological imagination. An optional package combines Schaefer, Sociology, Seventh Edition and Reel Society Interactive Movie 2.0 CD-ROM at nominal extra cost.

"The introductory sociology class provides the ideal laboratory in which to study our own society and those of our global neighbors. The distinctive emphasis on social policy found in this text shows students how to use the sociological imagination in examining such public policy issues as sexual harassment, the AIDS crisis, welfare reform, the death penalty, and the offshoring of service jobs." Richard T. Schaefer

Product Reviews:
  Marxist propaganda ( krebsman )
Can anyone still be preaching Karl Marx in the 21st Century? Richard T. Schaefer can. Thanks to Mr. Schaefer, I now know that as a white male I must get up every morning and ask myself, "whom can I oppress and exploit today? Let's see, how about some poor female or someone of an ethnic minority?" I found it offensive all the way through and told my professor that I was offended that she chose this textbook. Mr. Schaefer pretends that he's writing a sociology textbook, but the book is basically Marxist propaganda. Schaefer presents the three basic approaches to sociology, but he cannot hide his Marxist bias, which colors everything in the entire book. (I would also like to add that the readers on the audio CD are incredibly pretentious and have some strange ideas about the pronunciation of the English language, i.e., the word "united" is accented on the first syllable.) The only thing useful that I got out of this book was that an idea I thought was my own had actually been hatched by Erving Goffman fifty years ago. (I plan to read something by Goffman now.) I would strongly advise educators against using this textbook. There are surely others that are not propaganda.
  Sociology book
The book is new but it didn't come with a CD. When the information comes up it says it was "with audio Abridgement CD - Rom..."", only the owner said it wasn't part, so I didn't read it all and thought I was buing something with CR-Rom. You should always read how Amazon says about the product and what the owners says. I had to different information about the same product
  Sociology: A Brief Introduction w/Audio
This product came to me in a timely fashion and I was prepared to start my class.
  Great Sociology Book
When I bought this book I was a Sociology major. Since then I have changed my major, but I will keep this book forever. Although we were assigned readings in class, I rarely did so, but when I did I was intrigued. This is a well written easy to follow book. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is even slightly interested in Sociology or studying sociology. The author doesn't bury the reader with useless fluff or try to drown you in big technical wording. This book starts out by giving the background of sociology and a brief bio of the initial major contributors in the field. I haven't gotten rid of this book because when I decide to MAKE time to read, I will read this again. It's got my vote.
  Excellent Service ( sarsora428 )
