Product Description

There is a patch of ground in Tennessee dedicated to the science of death, where human remains lie exposed to be studied for their secrets. The real-life scientist who founded the "Body Farm" has broken cold cases and revolutionized forensics . . . and now he spins an astonishing tale inspired by his own experiences.

Renowned anthropologist Dr. Bill Brockton has spent his career surrounded by death at the Body Farm. Now he's being called upon to help solve a baffling puzzle in a remote mountain community. The mummified corpse of a young woman dead for thirty years has been discovered in a cave, the body bizarrely preserved and transformed by the environment's unique chemistry. But Brockton's investigation is threatening to open old wounds among an insular people who won't forget or forgive. And a long-buried secret prematurely exposed could inflame Brockton's own guilt—and the dangerous hostility of bitter enemies determined to see him fail . . . by any means necessary.

Product Reviews:
  A real page turner
This book is the best I've read in a long time. Being a fan of both true crime and fiction, this book has it all. I get the impression that although the names have been changed (sometimes) that the story has lots of true elements in it. For instance, the main character in the book refers to not only Kay Scarpetta (fictional) but also Michael Baden (real person) This book had me laughing out loud when the character, written in first person, has some kind of hang up or another, he is self-depreciating and very very funny. Some of the predicaments he gets himself into could only be true, fiction could never be so funny! The only problem was, that the laughing out loud happened at two or three in the morning when I should have been sleeping. I couldn't put this book down! On several evenings, I would read, go to bed.... lie awake thinking of the book... and then get up and read some more. I would promise myself "only one more chapter" and then couldn't bear to put the book down and go to bed. Reads on the same level as any Patricia Cornwell novel, of which I am a big fan. If the rest in the series are as good as this one, I will deffinately be a new fan of the writing team of Jefferson and Bass. If you enjoy Scarpetta, Grafton or Ann Rule books, this is a new avenue to discover. Highly recommended.
Hillarious mountain humor mixed with forensic sleuth!! ( nurselinzy )
This is a great book! I love all the Body Farm Novels. THis is one of the best. It has forensics, booby-traps, cock fights, big trucks, southern boys and laughs. I want to visit Tennesee and the beautiful mountains after reading this book. What's so great is the body farm is real! This book really touched my heart. Trying to solve a mytery of a girl's death that was with child when she died. The good professor "Bill" is awesome. He goes out of his way and all over the place to solve this crime. Through tunnels, briars, you name it. Would recommend this book to read and as a gift.
  Great Book
I just love these authors. I have all of their books and I loved them all. Not only do you get a "whodunit" but you learn a little on the way. Very interesting. Definitely recommend. Can't wait for the next one.
A must if you have read any of the other Body Farm Novels
This is a very good mystery novel. It is a must if you have read any of the other Body Farm Novels. If this is the first of the novels then I would highly recommend the ones that follow this one. It is good, but the ones that follow are even better.
Surprised by all the Good Reviews of this Book ( thrillerlovers )
I'm apparently in the minority here, but I really thought CARVED IN BONE was a pretty poor effort. This is a forensic anthropolgy mystery, in the style of Kathy Reichs, but it's far inferior to her work.

The flaws with CARVED IN BONE are many. The characterization in this book is paper-thin, and the main character Dr. Bill Brockton is about as bland a hero as you can imagine. The romantic subplots involving Brockton are almost embarrsingly bad and sophomoric. The mystery plot just plods along, and the novel is filled with page after page of numbing exposition. Overall, this book just has a flat, uninspired quality that makes it a subpar read.

There's some interesting information about forensics in CARVED IN BONE, but nothing you couldn't find in a far superior book by Kathy Reichs or Patricia Cornwell. Unless you're a hardcore forensics junkie, my advice is to stick with those authors and to skip this misfire.
